Clos Alkio

Let the grapes speak

Clos Alkio was founded in 2020 by Mikko Alkio, a Finnish wine enthusiast with a longstanding connection to Catalonia. The estate comprises around 25 hectares of land near Gratallops, one of Priorat's most renowned winemaking villages.

Clos Alkio produces high-quality wines rooted in Priorat tradition. The focus is on old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Tempranillo. The estate also produces complex white wines.

Our single-variety wines offer a clear expression of the individual grape varieties grown in Priorat.

Clos Alkio has invested in modern winery equipment to support precise, high-quality production. Since August 2022, the estate has had the capacity to process 25,000 kilograms of grapes in-house.

At 7 Calle Saperas in Gratallops, Clos Alkio continues the winemaking tradition of a historic cellar dating back to the 14th century.

Inspired by the Nature of Priorat

Priorat is a small and distinctive wine region in southern Catalonia, around 40 minutes from Tarragona and the Mediterranean coast. Its winemaking history stretches back centuries.

Nearly a thousand years ago, Carthusian monks began cultivating vines here and shared their knowledge of viticulture with local communities.

Priorat's rugged landscape and llicorella soils create distinctive conditions for viticulture.

Clos Alkio works to respect and protect the natural environment of Priorat in every aspect of its operations.

Artisanal wines with
Minimal intervention

All work in our vineyards is carried out by hand, from winter and green pruning to the harvest.

We are working towards organic certification and use only natural products in the vineyard and cellar.

The quality of the grapes is fundamental to us. Our vineyards are dry-farmed, relying on natural rainfall rather than irrigation to increase yields.

The same low-intervention approach guides our work in the cellar.

Renovation

In October 2020, Clos Alkio purchased Calle Saperas 7.

The cellar is believed to date back to the 11th century. It contains two large stone vats in which thousands of kilograms of grapes were trodden over the centuries.

We completed the cellar renovation in the summer of 2022, and since then the winery has been fully licensed by DOQ Priorat.

The tasting room and residential floors have also been completed and will serve our clients and guests.

In addition to the winery on Calle Saperas, we have renovated the neighbouring house in Gratallops.

Planting and
land development

Following the seasons from one year to the next is fascinating: no two vintages are alike.

A key part of Clos Alkio's long-term plan is to acquire land and historic buildings in Priorat, restoring them for the estate's own use and, where appropriate, for guests.

We aim to care for our vineyards while improving the long-term health and productivity of the land.

Our priority is to strengthen biodiversity and improve grape quality rather than maximise volume.

Severe drought affected the estate from late 2022 until the winter of 2025. Conditions have since improved, giving us renewed optimism.

In the future, we hope to cultivate a broad range of grape varieties, matching each one to the sites best suited to it.

Climate change remains our greatest concern and will inevitably shape the future of Priorat.

Mikko Alkio

I visited Priorat for the first time in October 2013. I was nervous, as I had never been comfortable with mountain roads or heights. I first arrived in Porrera, from where I drove to Torroja de Priorat. The harvest was still under way at several small family wineries and, although it was a Sunday, people were working throughout the region.

In 2018 and 2019, the idea of establishing my own small winery began to take shape. I soon realised that I wanted to build the project from the ground up: to acquire land and establish my own winery. I made my first acquisitions during the Covid-19 crisis, and Clos Alkio was born.

Above all, I want to respect Priorat's traditions and the lives of the people who call it home. At the same time, I believe my best contribution is to bring something new that belongs naturally within Priorat.

My other passion is competition law and economics. I work as a partner in a Finnish law firm. Priorat has now become my second home.

General manager & winemaker

Judit Llop

Judit Llop, Clos Alkio's General Manager and winemaker, brings more than two decades of international experience to the estate. She has worked at wineries in Spain, Chile, France and Australia, combining a deep respect for traditional winemaking with a practical drive to explore new ideas.

Alongside her training in oenology and agricultural engineering, Judit holds an Executive MBA. This blend of technical knowledge and strategic leadership guides her work at Clos Alkio.

Her aim is to make wines that express Priorat clearly: its grape varieties, its slate soils and the character of each vintage.
